Who would have thought that the simple tree planting project in Bilar, Bohol will become one of the tourist destinations in the province today? It all started back in 1960 when soil erosion and floods became a disaster due to the Kaingin system which devastated the whole rainforest. Lead by former Governor Lino Chatto, the government required each one to plant a tree and nobody was allowed to cut it without a permit.
Look at it now.. Just after a few decades, it has become a 2 kilometer stretch of forest, firmly planted with Mahogany trees and it's well preserved too-- now called Bohol's Manmade forest.
From Tagbilaran City, you will pass by the manmade forest on your way to Simply Butterflies and Chocolate Hills. So you may want to stop over for few minutes so you can feel its cool breeze and the sudden change of temperature. Even during hot season, you will still be soaked with in the cool air.
We definitely need to plant more trees. We need more forests... This is a calling not only for one or two but for each one of us, may it be a child or an adult. Plants and trees do not only provide beauty and shade in our surroundings, but it also alter the environment in which we live by improving air quality, conserving water, and harboring wildlife.
The national reforestation program started during former Pres. Diosdado Macapagal's term, and with all the catastrophe happening nowadays, I hope the new Aquino administration will take this as a serious matter as well.
